Most people wear braces for about one to three years, and many treatments fall somewhere in the middle of that range. The exact time depends on how much your teeth and bite need to move, how your body responds, and how closely you follow your orthodontist's instructions. Your orthodontist can give you a personal estimate only after examining your teeth.
If you are in Nagpur and thinking about braces, here is what decides your treatment time and what you can do to help it stay on schedule.
Why there is no single answer
Braces work by applying gentle, steady pressure that slowly moves teeth through the bone. The bone around each tooth reshapes as the tooth moves, and this is a biological process that cannot be rushed safely. Moving teeth too quickly can harm the roots and the gums.
Because every mouth starts from a different place, two people who begin braces on the same day can finish months apart. A small gap between the front teeth is a very different job from correcting a deep bite or severe crowding.
What affects how long braces take
Several things together decide your treatment time:
How crowded or spaced your teeth are. Mild crowding usually needs less time than severe crowding or large gaps.
Your bite. Correcting an overbite, underbite, crossbite or open bite involves moving the jaws' relationship, not just straightening a row of teeth, so it usually takes longer.
Whether extra steps are needed. Some plans include tooth removal to create space, an expander, or rubber bands (elastics). These are planned for good reasons but can add time.
Your age. Children and teenagers are still growing, which can help with some corrections. Adults can absolutely have braces, but their bone is fully mature, so some movements may take a little longer.
The type of appliance. Metal braces, ceramic braces and clear aligners all move teeth effectively, but the right choice depends on your case. You can read more about the options on our braces and aligners page.
The stages of braces treatment
Knowing the stages makes the journey feel more manageable:
Consultation and planning. The orthodontist examines your teeth, takes records such as X-rays and photographs, and explains the plan.
Fitting the braces. Brackets are bonded to your teeth and a wire is placed. The first few days can feel sore or tight, which usually settles.
Active treatment. You visit for adjustments, typically every four to eight weeks. Each visit moves your teeth a step closer to the planned position.
Removing the braces. Once your teeth and bite are in place, the braces come off and your teeth are cleaned and polished.
Retention. You wear retainers to hold your new smile in place. This stage is just as important as the braces themselves.
How you can help your treatment stay on track
You cannot speed up the biology, but you can avoid the things that slow treatment down:
Keep every appointment. Missed or postponed adjustments are one of the most common reasons treatment runs longer.
Wear elastics or aligners exactly as advised. They only work while they are in your mouth.
Protect your brackets. Hard, sticky and chewy foods such as hard nuts, toffees and chewing gum can break brackets or bend wires. Each repair can set progress back.
Brush and floss carefully. Food trapped around brackets can lead to gum swelling and white spots on teeth, which may need attention during treatment.
Tell your orthodontist about problems early. A loose bracket or poking wire is easier to fix sooner rather than later.
What happens after the braces come off
Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back towards their old positions, especially in the first months after treatment. That is why retainers matter. Your orthodontist will advise whether you need a removable retainer, a fixed wire behind the teeth, or both, and how long to wear it each day.
Many orthodontists recommend wearing retainers at night for the long term, because teeth can keep shifting slowly throughout life. Looking after your retainer protects the time and effort you put into your braces. If you have more questions, our FAQs page covers many common ones.
Frequently asked questions
Can braces be done in six months?
Some mild cases can be corrected fairly quickly, but most comprehensive treatments take longer. Your orthodontist will tell you what is realistic for your teeth after an examination.
Do adults take longer to finish braces?
Sometimes. Adult bone is fully developed, so certain movements can be slower. Many adults still complete treatment successfully, and age alone is not a reason to avoid braces.
Are clear aligners faster than braces?
Not necessarily. Aligners can work well for many cases, but how long they take depends on the case and on wearing them for the hours advised each day.
