Most orthodontists ask you to wear clear aligners for about 20 to 22 hours every day. In simple terms, your aligners should be in your mouth all the time, except when you eat, drink anything other than plain water, and clean your teeth. Aligners can only move teeth while you are wearing them, so the hours you put in make a real difference to how your treatment goes.
Why wear time matters so much
Clear aligners, including Invisalign, work by applying gentle, steady pressure to your teeth. Each set of trays is shaped slightly differently from the last, and your teeth move a small step towards the planned position with every set.
That movement needs pressure that is constant. When aligners stay out for long stretches, teeth can begin to drift back, and the next set may not fit as it should. This is why wear time is the single habit your orthodontist will talk about the most.
What a 22-hour day looks like
Twenty-two hours sounds like a lot, but it simply means about two hours a day without your aligners. For most people, that time goes on:
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Tea, coffee or any drink other than plain water
Brushing and flossing before the aligners go back in
A few habits make it easier:
Keep meals focused. Long, slow snacking through the day adds up quickly.
Carry your case. Put aligners in the case, never in a tissue or a pocket, where they are easily lost or thrown away.
Brush, then put them back. Food trapped under an aligner sits against your teeth for hours.
Set reminders. A phone alarm after meals helps in the first few weeks.
What happens if you wear aligners less
Missing a few hours now and then is common, especially at the start. But if aligners are regularly worn for less time than advised, you may notice:
Trays that feel tight or do not seat fully on the teeth
Teeth that do not move as planned (orthodontists call this "tracking")
A need to stay on a set for longer, or extra aligners to correct the course
Treatment taking longer overall
If you have been out of your aligners for longer than usual, do not skip ahead to the next set. Put the current set back in and speak to your orthodontist, who can tell you what to do for your case.
Eating, drinking and aligners
Plain water is the only thing you should drink with your aligners in. Tea, coffee, juices and soft drinks can seep under the trays and sit against your teeth, which raises the risk of stains and cavities. Hot drinks may also warp the plastic.
For many families in Nagpur, the day includes several cups of chai and snacks between meals. You do not have to give these up, but it helps to group them together, so the aligners come out fewer times. Rinse or brush before putting them back.
Will wearing them all day be uncomfortable?
It is normal to feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two when you start a new set. This usually eases as your teeth settle into the new trays. Many people find it easier to switch to a new set at night, so the first few hours of pressure pass while they sleep.
Your speech may sound slightly different for the first few days, and this usually settles as your tongue gets used to the trays. If an edge rubs your cheek or gum, or the soreness does not ease, contact your orthodontist rather than leaving the aligners out.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear aligners only at night?
Night-only wear is generally not enough to move teeth during active treatment. After treatment, retainers are often worn at night, but that is a different stage, and your orthodontist will guide you.
Can I take them out for a wedding or a special event?
An occasional few hours out is usually manageable, but check with your orthodontist first. Wear them as much as possible for the rest of that day and get back to your full routine the next day.
How often do I change to a new set?
It depends on your treatment plan. Your orthodontist will tell you when to switch and will check that your teeth are tracking well at each visit.
Getting started with aligners
Clear aligners suit many teens and adults, but the right choice depends on your teeth, your bite and how comfortable you are with wearing them full-time. Some people find fixed braces a better fit for their routine. You can read more about both options on our braces and aligners page, or see how long braces take for a comparison of treatment time.
